1. Check Dimensions Check that all the dimensions shown are correct.
2. Re-space Luff Slides. We may have respaced the luff slides, to keep them evenly spaced, and within the guidelines in the Tech Manual. If a full batten sail, or there is any chance that full battens may be added, we will locate a slide where the batten would intersect the luff at a 90 degree angle. Make sure this is so. If a slide should be removed, it is marked R. If a new slide has been added, it is marked N. If there are no marks adjacent to the slides, the slide location is OK. Slide locations must be within 3-4” of our drawing, or the layout will be wrong.
3. Square Fairleads to Luff Each horizontal row of fairleads will be run 90 degrees from each slide location. Fairlead rows will not be parallel with the foot if the foot is not 90 degrees to the luff. Normally, you run 2 measuring tapes. One is run up the luff, starting at the tack. The second tape is run from a place near the clew, parallel with the luff. If the tack angle is not 90 degrees, square off from the tack so the end of clew tape is 90 degrees to the end of the luff tape. These tapes will be used to keep a measuring batten 90 degrees to the luff. Secure tapes with masking tape. Another option is to use a large square taped to a batten about the length of the foot to keep the fairleads 90 degrees to the luff. A third option is to flake the sail as indicated for the HySpeed installation method, with the slides in the middle of each fold. You will mark the sail by using an awl at the control line locations provided in the layout. See Section 8 of the 2003 Technical Manual.
4. Mark Control Line locations on a Batten Using a batten about the length of the foot, mark the control line locations on the batten. See the Layout Information section. For each control lines, we give the Top Slide the uppermost fairlead is in line with, and the Measurement Out from the luff for all the fairleads. Starting from the front of the batten, mark these locations on the batten.
5. Check Control Line Locations Locate the slide one slide above the uppermost slide location for the front control line. Check the layout by laying the front end of the batten at this slide. With the batten 90 degrees to the luff, the mark on the batten should be past the leech by at least one inch. Very important. If not, call us.
6. Start Marking Sail Move the batten down one slide. The mark on the batten should be at least 6” in from the leech. If not, call us. Mark the sail where the mark is on the batten. Use something square at the batten mark to make a 3” long vertical pencil mark, to line up the fairlead. Repeat for the next slide down.
7. Mark Tab Location When you get to the foot, mark the tab location on the foot. Square off any tack cut back, and move the batten forward by 1” for every 3” the slide stop is above the gooseneck. This info should be collected from the customer. A form to collect this info is on the back of our brochure.
8. Repeat for Next Aft Control Line Repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 to check and mark the locations for the aft control lines. You can also mark these locations as you work your way down the sail for the forward control line.
9. Check Layout Check that the number of fairleads in the vertical rows are either all odd, or all even. Very important. For example, 2 line layouts will often have 10 fairleads in the front row, and 4 fairleads in the back row. 3 line layouts will often have 13, 7 and 3 fairleads in the vertical rows. Control lines should be evenly spaced, and not more than 5-6’ apart. If the layout we have provided does not work exactly as drawn call us.
10. Install Hardware See Tech Manual for more information. Install fairleads (uppermost fairleads must be larger or will be a grommet or press ring in a diamond patch on larger systems – look for a on the layout), Sew tabs to foot. If loose footed or sail has a shelf foot, install aft tab 3” above straight line from tack to clew and the next tab 6” above. For additional control lines, move each tab forward 2” higher. Make up topping lift with control lines attached and run lines through sail if an A system. Supply topping lift separately if a B/C System.
